What is Epitalon?
Epitalon (Epithalon, Epitalon, Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) is a synthetic tetrapeptide developed by Professor Vladimir Khavinson at the St Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. It is the synthetic form of the active region of epithalamin — an extract of the pineal gland — and one of the most studied peptides in bioregulatory ageing research.
The main research interest focuses on its ability to activate telomerase — the enzyme that maintains the length of telomeres (the protective ends of chromosomes). In addition, Epitalon affects the pineal gland and the circadian rhythm of melatonin, linking it with sleep and the “biological clock”.

How Epitalon acts — telomerase and the pineal gland
TELOMERASE ACTIVATION
Epitalon stimulates telomerase, the enzyme that maintains the length of telomeres — the protective ends that shorten with every cell division.
PINEAL GLAND / MELATONIN
It directly affects melatonin synthesis and, in aged animal models, restores its circadian rhythm through stimulation of the pineal gland.
BIOREGULATION
As a bioregulatory peptide, it regulates gene expression and the action of certain enzymes, in a broad context of cellular ageing.
Why telomeres matter in ageing
Telomeres shorten with every cell division; when they become too short, the cell loses the ability to divide. Telomerase reverses this process. A 2025 study confirmed telomere elongation in human cell lines under Epitalon, both through an increase in telomerase and through the alternative lengthening of telomeres mechanism (ALT).

Telomerase and telomeres
Studies showed telomerase activation and telomere elongation in various models. A 2025 study confirmed the effect in human cell lines, through telomerase and the ALT mechanism.
Pineal gland, melatonin and ageing
In animal models, Epitalon restores the circadian rhythm of melatonin and regulates immune and enzymatic parameters. Older human studies with epithalamin (the parent peptide) reported lower mortality in elderly people.
