What is SS-31?
SS-31 (also known as Elamipretide, MTP-131, Bendavia) is a tetrapeptide that targets the mitochondria. It binds selectively to cardiolipin — a lipid of the inner mitochondrial membrane — stabilising the mitochondrial cristae, reducing oxidative stress and increasing ATP production (cellular energy).
Unlike general antioxidants such as Glutathione, which act throughout the cell, SS-31 concentrates directly in the mitochondrion — the energy factory of the cell. In September 2025, the FDA approved Elamipretide for Barth syndrome (a rare mitochondrial disease). In the Peptology version, SS-31 is supplied as a lyophilised research peptide with purity > 99%, in 10 mg and 50 mg. It is NOT the approved medicine — it is intended exclusively for scientific, research and in vitro applications.
How SS-31 acts — cardiolipin and the mitochondrion
BINDING TO CARDIOLIPIN
It binds selectively to cardiolipin, stabilising the cristae of the membrane.
ATP PRODUCTION
It supports the electron transport chain and increases ATP production.
ROS REDUCTION
It reduces reactive oxygen species (ROS) — the oxidative stress that damages the mitochondrion.
As cardiolipin degrades with age or in disease, mitochondria become less efficient and produce more oxidative stress. SS-31 accumulates selectively in the mitochondrion and acts directly at the source. The mechanisms come from clinical and preclinical studies and are not a guarantee of the result of a research product.

Barth syndrome (FDA approval)
In September 2025, the FDA approved Elamipretide for Barth syndrome — the first approved indication of the molecule.
Heart failure
Studies showed a 10–15% improvement in peak VO₂ after 4 weeks of intravenous administration; the PROGRESS-HFpEF study evaluated the benefit at 24 weeks in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.
Other directions

Storage
BEFORE RECONSTITUTION

AFTER RECONSTITUTION

FREEZING
Not recommended. Freeze/thaw cycles degrade the structure of the peptide.
Four mistakes to avoid
1. Shaking for “faster dissolution”
Foam = denaturation. Only gentle swirling between the palms.
2. Unsuitable solvent
