What is Melanotan 2?
MT-2 (Melanotan II, Melanotan 2 acetate) is a synthetic cyclic peptide, an analogue of melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It activates the melanocortin receptors and has a multi-action profile: pigmentation (tanning), libido and appetite reduction — all through different melanocortin receptors.
Unlike MT-1 (Melanotan I), which is more selective for pigmentation, MT-2 is less selective and also activates the MC3R/MC4R receptors of the brain — hence the effects on libido and appetite. PT-141 (Bremelanotide) is in fact a metabolite of MT-2, with a focus on libido.

How MT-2 acts — melanocortin receptors
MC1R — PIGMENTATION
Binding to MC1R in the skin, MT-2 triggers melanin production — the same pathway as α-MSH and UV, but without radiation.
MC4R — LIBIDO/APPETITE
Activation of MC4R in the brain increases sexual arousal and reduces appetite — primary actions through different receptors.
STABLE α-MSH ANALOGUE
As a cyclic peptide, MT-2 has greater stability than natural α-MSH, with a half-life of approximately 1–2 hours.
Why MT-2 has multiple actions at the same time
Natural α-MSH acts on MC1R (pigmentation). MT-2, being less selective, also activates MC3R, MC4R and MC5R. This is why pigmentation, libido and appetite reduction appear together — they are actions of different receptors that are activated simultaneously. Visible pigmentation begins in 3–7 days, with a peak at 2–4 weeks.

Research
Melanogenesis and photoprotection
The original idea (University of Arizona, 1990s) was to stimulate melanin production to reduce the need for UV exposure. MT-2 triggers pigmentation via MC1R, independently of radiation.
Libido and sexual function
Clinical studies of the 1990s showed that MT-2 reliably caused erection in men with psychogenic and organic erectile dysfunction — an observation that led to the development of PT-141.
Limitations and precautions
MT-2 remains unapproved for human use in the major markets. There are reservations about the monitoring of moles (naevi) and pigmentary changes, which is why it is used exclusively in a research context.

Storage
BEFORE RECONSTITUTION

FREEZING
